Prominent Theme

In "Cry, The Beloved Country" there are many important themes, but I believe that there is one that drives the whole story and that is fear. Fear is by far the leading theme in the story. The first book begins with fear, carried by fear, and ends with the fear of the unknown.

In the second chapter of the first book it says, "They were silent, and she said (Kumalo's Wife), how we desire such a letter, and when it comes, we fear to open it" (37). This is the first sign of fear in the book, it is the fear of the unknown. This shows that they might have been worried about the way that Kumalo's family has been living in such a large city. They were scared of what information that would be contained in the letter and the inability to unread it. The fear from the first part of the book transitions into the middle of the book.

In the eleventh chapter of the first book it says, "Sadness and fear and hate, how they well up in the heart and mind, whenever one opens the pages of these messengers of doom" (104). This brings fear up again when they are talking about the death of Arthur Jarvis. The fear of losing all of the progress that Jarvis has made with trying to stop native crime and have equal rights for all of South Africa. It also shows the fear of further suppression by the white people. I also think that my first quotation was foreshadowing this quotation in this paragraph and the unablility to unread what you have seen. The death of Jarvis is the center of fear for the rest of book one.

In the sixteenth chapter of the first book it says, "And Kumalo himself could not continue, for the words were like knives, cutting into a wound that was still new and open. She sat down on a box, and looked at the floor, and the tears started to run slowly down cheeks" (144). This is how Absolom's fiance responds to the news of Absolom murdering Jarvis. She is fearful for the fate of her soon to be husband. It does not look very good for Absolom's future because he killed an innocent white man that fought for equal rights for all people. The fear of the unknown fate of Absolom is what carries the rest of the book.

Fear is by far the biggest theme in "Cry, The Beloved Country". There are three points that show fear in the first part of the book, the middle of the book, and toward the end of book one. It begins with receiving a letter, then the death of a supporter of the blacks, and ends with receiving bad news about a loved one. Fear has drove the first book, and I am sure it will drive books two and three. Maybe Absolom will go to jail, or he might get lucky, either way I am sure there will be some fear.

I Believe in Technology

I Believe in Technology

I believe in technology. Technology has the ability to open new doors, innovate, and change the world for the better. If it were not for technology nothing would be how it is today. There would not be anything modern, no skyscrapers, no phones, no cars, it is all technology. You can do anything with it. You can make things, research, communicate, there is no limits for technology.

Look inside your pocket, chances are you have a smart phone in there. Do you ever think about how much you can do with it? You can stream movies, download a GPS app, look up how to ride a unicycle underwater, you can even run a business with one. Think of something absurd, and I am 99% positive there is something on Google. With a tap or two you can change the world.

Without technology, where would we be today as humans? We would be walking around clueless. The cavemen would be a step ahead, at least they would have wooden clubs and fire. When we think of technology we think of the latest iPhone or television screen, but Webster's website defines technology as the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems. So, technically without it we would be knots on a log without technology.

I remember the day i fell in love with technology. It was on August 6th, the summer after my 7th grade year of school. I got an iPhone 3GS for my birthday. It was my first phone and I loved it! From that day on I have loved technology. It made me smarter, and made life easier. It also opened my eyes to things I never knew existed, things like Google, YouTube, Netflix, and many other things I have grown to love.

Technology is amazing. You can do anything with technology. Technology is everywhere these days, and it is changing the world.  What would we do without it? We would be no where, steps behind cavemen. Technology makes life easier and opens new doors that may have never been opened without it. I believe in technology.

Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Mom's Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients:
  • 1x 15oz. can of pumpkin
  • 1x 14oz. can of Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
  • 2x eggs
  • 1/2x teaspoon of ground ginger, nutmeg, and salt
  • 1x teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1x nine inch unbaked pie shell.

Preparation:
Every Thanksgiving I can remember mom rushing to finish her specialty, pumpkin pie. We have eaten this for as long as I can remember, and every year it seems like it takes longer and longer to finally get to Thanksgiving lunch with all of our family. All of our family loves it, and secretly we all rush to finish the dry turkey to get to the good stuff, desert.

The pie is fairly easy to make, but even though it is easy to make it is much better than any other pumpkin pie that I have ever eaten. It tastes so good that it seems like it is a little taste of heaven, perfection in slices. Then, we get some whipped cream out, and the pie becomes thousands of times better. It has so much suger in it my grandpa always says,''don't eat too much or you'll be up till midnight''. Hearing that always makes me laugh because midnight is not that late, and I can go to sleep whenever, trust me I am a professional.

I remember waking up at the crack of dawn when I was younger just so I could catch my mom finishing mixing the ingredeints together so I could lick the spoon. She always told me not to, but I did it anyways. My dad and my sister also liked to do it, but I would always beat them to it. My mom always wondered who did it, but she never did figure out the mystery of the licked spoon because I always blamed my dad and sister, and they always blamed me.

Whenever I eat or think about this pie I remember the event and who was there and what we talked about. One year all we heard was, "you would not believe how bad my knee hurts", because my grandma had just had knee surgery. Another year one of my cousins could not make it because of his "studies", but we all know he went to Thanksgiving lunch with his girlfriend. We forgave him, but did not let him forget about it. Other years we just talk about life with no specific thing to talk about, but we are always greatful for all of our blessings.

This pie is more than just a pie; it is a door to the past. It brings back times of thanks, for family and our blessings. I remember the laughs, the conversations, and the amazing food. It is a reminder of all I have, great family, and amazing pumpkin pie to eat in the world.

 Amazed by a Drowned Man

The people in this story were amazed by a drowned man that washed upon the shore one day because he was different. The people in the story felt sorry for the man because he had a hard life because of his differences. There was one thing in the story that I thought was very strange. How was he so different?

The man who drowned was an amazement for many in the story because he was different than everyone else. I think this man was the modern day stud. He was described to be very tall, wide, good looking, and heavy. He could not sit in most chairs because the chairs were not sturdy enough. He also had trouble getting through doors because of his height and width. Everyone was infatuated with him; both men and woman. People felt sorry for the man because of his differences.

The man had lots of struggles because he was so different from everyone else. Things were going to be changed because of the drowned man. The people were going to increase the strength of the floors, heighten the ceilings, and many more improvements to accompany others like the drowned man. The people were so amazed by the man they wanted it to be known as "Esteban's Village" from then on. I liked how they changed all of those things to not let people like Esteban feel out of place.

One thing that I thought was strange was that the children played with the drowned man. I do not think the author should have included this in the story. When you think of kids playing you think of a basketball and a jump rope. You do not think of kids playing with a drowned man. If I found a drowned man I would be terrified, and sure would not be playing with it. Other than that it was a interesting story.

The drowned man was an amazement for everyone in the village. He encouraged the people of the village to improve several things so that people like him would not feel out of place any longer. The author put one thing in the story that I do not believe should have been in the story. I was not amazed by the drowned man, Esteban.

 Feeling Empty

We have all felt the empty feeling that lost brings. The text says,''I still make coffee for two", and that makes me believe the man in the text has lost someone, and still is not finished grieving for his lost loved one. The man lost someone, but who? I have never lost anyone who was important to me, but other people I know have, and I am not looking forward to losing someone important to me.

The text talks about making two cups of coffee, but in the picture it is just one man. The picture is ominous, the colors are not bright like the colors of a happy picture would be. The man in the picture seems to be in deep thought; possibly about his lost loved one. He also seems to be frowning because he remembered all the good times and the bad times. All of these little details lead me to believe that this man has lost someone who was important to him, but who was it?

Losing someone who is important to you is not ever good, but it can be worse depending on who you lost. Maybe he lost an acquaintance, that is never fun, but would it not be worse if his dad died? If he lost anyone I think would have been someone he spent a lot of time with, like a grandparent, parent, or his wife. I believe that the man lost a grandparent, mother, father, or wife because everything in the text points toward deep grieving and he would not be grieving deeply if it was not someone he was very close too.

I have been lucky enough to not lose anyone who was important to me yet, but I have seen how detrimental it can be. I have seen some of my friends struggle with loss of a loved one. I have seen how it impacts the way they act, and how it eats at you because the last words the said to each other were harsh, or maybe they never got to say goodbye. I know it will eventually happen, and I will eventually feel like the man in the text, but hopefully not anytime soon.

The man is probably feeling empty because he has lost someone important to him. You probably would not make coffee on a regular basis with someone that you were not close with, and that makes me believe that it was a parent or his wife. I have gotten lucky, and have not lost anyone as important to me as the man in the text has, but everyone does eventually have that empty feeling that loss brings.
